When Data Is Empty: Lessons for Vietnamese Youth Football

Seemingly a technical glitch, it precisely mirrors a painful reality of Vietnamese youth football: we are operating a scouting machine where most information fragments remain in the dark. Over the years, I have followed youth tournaments from U15 to U19 across provinces. In places like PVF, Hanoi, and HAGL, data systems have begun to take shape: GPS devices, match cameras, detailed spreadsheets. But moving away from major academies, the picture becomes sparse. Matches of U17 Thanh Hoa or U19 Dong Thap often have no statistics beyond the scoreline. Goal scorers are mentioned in newspapers, but touches, distances covered, pressing efficiency – all remain unknowns. Without data, every assessment is subjective. I recall a selection camp in the Mekong Delta where scouts relied solely on their eyes to evaluate 200 young players in two days. As a result, many promising talents were overlooked, while some selected lacked the necessary physical foundation. A few years later, I met a boy who was cut in the first round – he now plays for a Second Division club, while the one chosen then had to retire due to repeated injuries. No system is perfect, but the absence of data makes risks even greater. The story of the 'impossible analysis' reminds me that at the national level, we need a shared data platform where every match of the national youth league is fully recorded, from minutes played and expected goals (xG) to passes per defensive action (PPDA). PVF and VFF have taken initial steps with tournament management systems, but adoption at local leagues remains slow. The cost of cameras and analytics software is not small, but in the long run, benefits far outweigh them. Imagine a scout working for a European club wanting to study a young Vietnamese player. He opens the Asian Football Confederation database and finds only a few youth international matches. Information on domestic leagues is almost nonexistent. He must spend his own money to fly to Vietnam, film and analyze himself. If not, he gives up. And we – those who love the national game – wonder why young players are not exported. The issue lies not in player quality, but in the thick layer of data dust covering our own football. Vietnamese football has come a long way since the previous decade. We won the AFF Cup, reached the Asian Cup quarterfinals, and played in the U20 World Cup. But to go further, we need a data revolution. Not just for media or fans, but so coaches have evidence in selection, doctors can monitor training loads, and scouts do not miss a single talent. Otherwise, we will forever repeat the phrase: 'Insufficient information – cannot assess – cannot proceed.' It is time to build a national sports data system where every match and every player is identified and tracked. This is not only the responsibility of the federation but also requires clubs, training centers, and the community of numbers-loving fans to join hands. One day, when a foreign analyst opens Vietnam's youth football data, they will find the treasure we are hiding – not intentionally, but because we ourselves have never excavated it.
